Angkor Wat Temple
Angkor Wat, or Angkor Wat Temple, is one of the largest religious monuments in the world, featuring a spectacular moat that encloses temple grounds with grand entrances and causeways leading to the massive multi-level, multi-towered ornate sandstone temple.
The south gate of Angkor Thom
The south gate of Angkor Thom is a very famous spot within Angkor Archaeological Park and one that shouldn’t be missed. Standing on the causeway, and admiring the sheer scale, as you find yourself drifting back in time to imagine how it must have felt to approach this spectacular city in its heyday is quite simply an experience you will hold forever.
Bayon Temple
The Bayon Temple is a richly decorated ancient Khmer temple located at the centre of Angkor Thom in Angkor Archaeological Park of Siem Reap, Cambodia. It is one of the must-see temples when visiting the area being famous for its array of towers with smiling faces and “baroque” architecture in a Khmer context.
Baphuon Temple & Phimeanakas
- Baphuon Temple: Located just northwest of Bayon, this grand mountain temple is famous for its majestic raised sandstone approach, immense scale, and impressive relic carvings on the upper tiers.
- Phimeanakas: Tucked inside the ancient Royal Palace enclosure of Angkor Thom, this pyramid-shaped state temple represents the classic architectural archetype of the 8th to 11th centuries.
Terrace of the Elephants & Terrace of the Leper King
- Terrace of the Elephants: An iconic, long-stretching stone platform adorned with lifelike carvings of elephants, used by ancient Khmer kings as a grand viewing grandstand for public ceremonies.
- Terrace of the Leper King: Located immediately north, this unique structure (locally known as Preah Lean Sdach Kumlung) features a stunning, deeply carved maze of devas, royalty, mythic figures, and underworld deities.
Afternoon Itinerary
Ta Prohm Temple (The “Tomb Raider Temple”)
After a break for a delicious local lunch, your Angkor Thom tour continues 3 km northeast to Ta Prohm Temple. Built in 1186 AD under King Jayavarman VII as a Buddhist monastic complex, it is popularly known in modern pop culture as the “Tomb Raider Temple”. Left largely as it was found, Ta Prohm features massive silk-cotton tree roots wrapping around crumbling stone walls, offering an unforgettable “lost jungle” atmosphere.
Phnom Bakheng Sunset Experience
Conclude your day at Bakheng Temple (Phnom Bakheng), the most popular spot to witness a sunset in Angkor Archaeological Park. Thanks to its elevated hilltop position, the temple’s 360-degree vista offers panoramic views of Angkor Wat and the surrounding lush landscapes. Watch the sun dip below the Cambodian horizon, casting a golden glow over ancient Khmer architecture, before returning safely to your hotel.
