📜 History
For centuries, Ratanakiri was primarily inhabited by various indigenous highland minorities (the Khmer Loeu), operating independently from the lowlands. Its modern history shifted in the mid-20th century with the introduction of rubber plantations under King Norodom Sihanouk. Notably, the province’s dense, isolated jungles served as a crucial stronghold for the Khmer Rouge leadership during their rise to power in the late 1960s. Today, it is a peaceful region transitioning from an agricultural hub into an eco-tourism hotspot.
📍 Geography
Bordering Laos to the north and Vietnam to the east, Ratanakiri’s landscape is distinct from the rest of flat, flooded Cambodia. It is characterized by the rolling hills of the Annamite Range, deep river valleys (like the Se San and Srepok rivers), dense tropical rainforests, and fertile red volcanic soil that supports coffee, rubber, and cashew plantations.

Because of its higher elevation, Ratanakiri enjoys a slightly cooler climate than the lowlands.
- Dry Season (November to April): The best time for traveling. The weather is pleasant, though roads can get incredibly dusty (earning the province its “red dust” reputation).
- Wet Season (May to October): The landscape turns brilliantly green, and waterfalls are at their most spectacular, but rural dirt roads can turn into challenging, muddy tracks.
🚗 How to Get There
The provincial capital is Banlung.
- By Bus/Minivan: The most common option. Daily air-conditioned minivans run from Phnom Penh (approx. 7–9 hours) and Siem Reap (approx. 6–8 hours) via modern, well-paved highways.
- By Private Car: Taxis can be hired from major cities for a faster, more comfortable door-to-door journey.
🗺️ Getting Around
- Motorbike Rental: Renting a semi-automatic or automatic scooter is the most popular way for adventurous travelers to explore Banlung and nearby attractions at their own pace.
- Tuk-Tuk / Remorque: Readily available in Banlung for day trips, though they might struggle on some of the rougher, steeper dirt tracks outside the town.
- Guided Tours: For deep jungle trekking or visiting indigenous villages, hiring a local guide with a 4×4 or motorbike is highly recommended.
