ep is a charming coastal province in southern Cambodia, formerly known as “Kep-sur-Mer.” Once the premier seaside retreat for the French and Cambodian elite, it is now famous for its relaxed atmosphere, sunset views, and world-class seafood.

🦀 Kep: The Coastal Jewel of Cambodia

📜 History

Founded in 1908 during the French Protectorate, Kep served as a glamorous holiday destination for high society. During the 1950s and 60s, it became the “Riviera of Southeast Asia,” filled with avant-garde modernist villas. Though many of these villas were abandoned during the Khmer Rouge era, their “ghostly” ruins still dot the landscape today, giving Kep a unique and hauntingly beautiful historical character.

📍 Geography

Located on a small peninsula, Kep is approximately 160 km southwest of Phnom Penh. The province is tiny but diverse, featuring a mix of mangroves, a white-sand beach, and the lush Kep National Park, which rises directly behind the town. It sits just 25 km from the town of Kampot and overlooks the Gulf of Thailand and nearby Vietnamese islands.

☀️ Climate

Kep enjoys a tropical coastal climate:

  • Cool/Dry Season (Nov – Feb): The best time to visit, with pleasant temperatures between 24°C and 30°C.
  • Hot Season (Mar – May): Clear skies and warmer water, perfect for island trips.
  • Rainy Season (Jun – Oct): Lush green landscapes and dramatic ocean sunsets, with occasional tropical showers.
