📜 History

Battambang was founded in the 11th century during the Khmer Empire, but its modern identity is deeply shaped by its shifting borders. For over a century (ending in 1907), it was governed by Siam (Thailand) as a semi-autonomous province. This Thai influence, combined with later French colonial administration, left the city with some of the best-preserved architectural heritage in Cambodia, blending classic French shopfronts with traditional Khmer style.

Located in northwest Cambodia, Battambang is the country’s second-largest province by area and is widely known as the “Rice Bowl of Cambodia.” * The Sangkae River: This central waterway winds directly through the capital city, cutting the province into eastern and western halves.

🚗 How to Get There

Battambang is highly accessible from Cambodia’s major hubs, though it currently does not have an active commercial airport.

  • From Siem Reap: A 2.5 to 3-hour drive via National Road 6 and 5. Alternatively, a highly scenic (but seasonal) 6 to 8-hour boat ride across the Tonle Sap Lake and up the Sangkae River is available.
  • From Phnom Penh: A 4 to 5-hour journey by express minivan or private car via National Road 5.
  • By Train: The Royal Railway offers a slow but incredibly scenic budget-friendly train ride connecting Phnom Penh and Battambang.

  • Phare Ponleu Selpak: A world-renowned NGO and circus school. Catching one of their evening acrobatics and theater performances is an absolute must-do.
  • Phnom Sampeau: A striking mountain featuring the somber Khmer Rouge Killing Caves, a hilltop pagoda with sweeping views, and the famous Bat Caves, where millions of bats stream out at sunset in a massive, hypnotic ribbon.
  • Wat Banan: Often called a smaller version of Angkor Wat, this 11th-century temple sits atop a hill and requires climbing 358 steps for panoramic countryside views.
