Kirirom National Park, whose name means “Mountain of Joy,” is Cambodia’s oldest national park and a favorite retreat for those looking to swap the heat of the plains for cool pine forests and misty mountain air.
🌍 Geography
Located in the Cardamom Mountains in Kampong Speu Province, Kirirom sits on a plateau roughly 700 meters above sea level.
- Unique Ecosystem: Unlike the tropical jungles found elsewhere in Cambodia, Kirirom is famous for its high-altitude pine forests, which give the area a scent and appearance similar to northern Europe or the Himalayas.
- Landscape: The park spans over 35,000 hectares, featuring rolling hills, winding streams, hidden waterfalls, and small lakes.
🌤️ Climate
Because of its elevation, Kirirom is significantly cooler than Phnom Penh or the coast.
- Cool/Dry Season (Nov – Feb): The most popular time to visit. Temperatures can dip to 15°C at night, so bringing a light jacket is essential.
- Green Season (May – Oct): The park becomes incredibly lush. While trails can be muddy, the waterfalls are at their most powerful and spectacular.
🗺️ How to Get There
Kirirom is situated about 115km west of Phnom Penh, making it an ideal day trip or weekend getaway.
- Private Taxi: The most comfortable option, taking about 2 to 2.5 hours from Phnom Penh. Expect to pay between $50 and $70 for a one-way trip.
- Bus/Minivan: Take any bus heading toward Sihanoukville or Koh Kong via National Road 4. Ask to be dropped at the Treng Trayeung junction, where local moto-taxis can take you the final 20km up the mountain.
- Self-Drive: Popular for adventurous travelers, though the road winding up the mountain requires a reliable vehicle and a confident driver.
🚲 Getting Around
- Motorbike: Many visitors rent motorbikes in Phnom Penh to explore the park’s many dirt tracks and hidden viewpoints.
- Hiking: Once at the top of the plateau, many of the main sites (the pine forest, waterfalls, and lakes) are accessible via a network of relatively flat walking trails.
- Bicycle: Mountain biking is a major draw here; many resorts, like vKirirom, offer rentals for exploring the forest loops.
🏛️ What to Do
- The Pine Forest & Royal Villas: Explore the ruins of the former King Sihanouk’s villa, a haunting shell of 1960s modernist architecture tucked away among the pines.
- Kirirom Waterfalls: The park has several “tiers” of waterfalls. They are perfect for a refreshing dip and are surrounded by bamboo huts where you can rent space for a picnic lunch.
- Chambok Community-Based Tourism: Located at the foot of the park, this award-winning project offers ox-cart rides, traditional dances, and a 40-meter waterfall.
- Viewpoints: Don’t miss the high ridges that offer panoramic views over the vast Cardamom mountain range.
- Birdwatching: Kirirom is a haven for rare birds and small mammals; early morning is the best time for a quiet walk to spot local wildlife.
