Prek Chak: The Coastal Gateway to Vietnam
Prek Chak is a significant international border crossing located in the Kampong Trach District of Kampot Province. Often paired with the Vietnamese town of Ha Tien, it serves as the primary overland link for travelers moving between Cambodia’s southern coast (Kep and Kampot) and Vietnam’s Mekong Delta or Phu Quoc Island.
🌍 Geography
Prek Chak is situated on the Gulf of Thailand, at the southwestern tip of Cambodia. The area is characterized by:
- Coastal Flatlands: A mix of salt fields, mangroves, and rural agricultural land.
- Proximity to Ha Tien: The border is just a few kilometers from the bustling Vietnamese seaside town of Ha Tien.
- Strategic Location: It is the closest border point for anyone traveling from the popular Cambodian seaside resort of Kep (approx. 25km away).
🌤️ Climate
Prek Chak shares the tropical coastal climate of Kampot and Kep:
- Dry Season (Nov – Apr): Sunny and breezy. This is the peak time for border crossings and coastal travel.
- Rainy Season (May – Oct): High humidity with frequent, heavy afternoon rain. The surrounding salt fields often flood during this time, creating a unique, watery landscape.
🗺️ How to Get There
- From Kep: A private taxi takes about 30–45 minutes. Tuk-tuks are also a popular and scenic way to reach the gate.
- From Kampot: The drive takes roughly 1 hour via National Road 33.
- From Vietnam: Travelers arrive from the Xa Xia (Ha Tien) border gate. It is a short, easy walk across the “no-man’s land” between the two immigration offices.
- From Phu Quoc: Take a high-speed ferry to Ha Tien, then a short 15-minute taxi or moto-ride to the Prek Chak border.
🚲 Getting Around
- Moto-Taxi (Motodup): The most common way to get from the border to nearby local destinations or into Ha Tien.
- Private Taxi: Readily available for travelers heading straight to Kep, Kampot, or Sihanoukville.
- Walking: The border crossing itself is compact and easily navigated on foot.
🏛️ What to Do
While primarily a transit point, the area around Prek Chak offers a few specific attractions:
- Casinos & Entertainment: Like many Cambodian border towns, Prek Chak features several large casino resorts, such as Ha Tien Vegas, which cater to international visitors.
- Kampong Trach Caves: Located about 20 minutes from the border, these stunning limestone caves and “hidden” swimming holes are a must-see for nature lovers.
- Salt Fields: On the road between Kep and Prek Chak, you can witness the traditional process of sea-salt harvesting (best seen from Jan to April).
- Seafood & Sunsets: Since it is so close to the coast, the area offers excellent fresh seafood. Many travelers enjoy a meal in nearby Kep or Ha Tien before or after their crossing.
