π History
For decades, Koh Kong was relatively isolated from the rest of Cambodia due to its rugged geography and lack of infrastructure. It long served as a trading hub with nearby Thailand. Following the end of the Khmer Rouge era and the construction of major bridges and highways in the early 2000s, the province transformed from a remote frontier into a thriving center for eco-tourism, conservation, and cross-border trade.
π Geography
Koh Kong shares its western border with Thailand and is bounded by the Gulf of Thailand to the south. The province’s landscape is defined by the dramatic Cardamom Mountains, which cascade down to a rugged coastline, pristine islands (including Koh Kong Island), and sprawling, interconnected river systems and estuaries.
βοΈ Climate
Koh Kong experiences a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons:
- Dry Season (November to April): Warm and sunny, ideal for trekking, beach trips, and island hopping.
- Wet Season (May to October): Heavy rainfall, which feeds the province’s spectacular waterfalls and turns the rainforests incredibly lush, though rural roads can become challenging.
π How to Get There
- By Car/Taxi: The most convenient and flexible option. From Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, you can take a private taxi or drive via National Road 4 and National Road 48. The journey from Phnom Penh takes roughly 4 to 5 hours.
- By Bus: Regular daily bus and minivan services connect Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, and Kampot to Koh Kong town (Khemarak Phoumin).
- From Thailand: You can cross the international border at Cham Yeam, which is just about 10 kilometers from Koh Kong town.
πΊοΈ Getting Around
- Tuk-Tuks & Motos: Widely available in Koh Kong town for short trips, local market visits, or rides to the nearby border.
- Rental Motorbikes: A popular choice for independent travelers looking to explore the surrounding countryside and nearby waterfalls.
- Boats: Essential for reaching Koh Kong Island, exploring the mangrove forests, or traveling to remote eco-resorts in Tatai.
π What to Do
- Explore Peam Krasop Mangrove Sanctuary: Walk along the elevated wooden boardwalks cutting through one of the most extensive mangrove forests in Southeast Asia.
- Relax at Tatai River & Waterfalls: Take a scenic boat ride or kayak along the pristine Tatai River, or visit the roaring Tatai Waterfall.
- Trek the Cardamom Mountains: Go on a guided jungle trek to spot rare wildlife, camp under the stars, or visit the remote eco-tourism village of Chi Phat.
- Escape to Koh Kong Island: Take a day trip to Cambodia’s largest island to enjoy untouched white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters.
