Stung Treng is a ruggedly beautiful province in northeastern Cambodia. Known as the point where the Sekong and the mighty Mekong rivers meet, it is a serene gateway for eco-tourists, wildlife enthusiasts, and travelers heading to or from Laos.
π Geography
Stung Treng is a land defined by its waterways. It sits at the confluence of the Mekong, Sekong, Sesan, and Srepok rivers.
- The Wetlands: The province is home to a unique Ramsar Siteβa protected wetland featuring flooded forests with ancient, twisted trees that create a mystical, “alien” landscape.
- The Landscape: Most of the province is sparsely populated, consisting of dense forests, river islands (kohs), and dramatic rocky outcrops along the riverbeds.
π€οΈ Climate
- Cool & Dry (Nov β Feb): This is the “peak” season. The river levels are perfect for boat tours, and the weather is pleasantly cool, especially in the mornings.
- Hot Season (Mar β May): Water levels drop, revealing beautiful sandy river beaches and hidden rock formations.
- Rainy Season (Jun β Oct): The rivers swell and become powerful. This is the best time to see the waterfalls at their most thunderous, though some rural roads can become challenging.
πΊοΈ How to Get There
Stung Treng is a major stop on the northern travel circuit:
- From Phnom Penh: A long but scenic journey (approx. 8β9 hours) via National Road 7. A private taxi or SUV is the most comfortable way to handle the distance.
- From Kratie: A shorter 2 to 2.5-hour drive, making it easy to combine these two provinces in one trip.
- From Laos: The Trapeang Kriel border is just 50km north of the town, connecting Cambodia to the 4,000 Islands (Si Phan Don) region.
π² Getting Around
- Boat: In Stung Treng, the river is the highway. Traditional long-tail boats are the best way to see the flooded forests and remote villages.
- Tuk-Tuk: Readily available in the provincial town for short trips to the market or nearby pagodas.
- Bicycle: The town itself is quiet and flat, making it very easy to explore by bike along the riverfront.
ποΈ What to Do
- The Flooded Forest (OβSvay): Take a guided boat trip through the Ramsar wetlands to see the incredible “flooded trees” that grow directly out of the water.
- Preah Rumkel & Sopheakmit Waterfall: Located near the Laos border, these massive rapids are where the Mekong crashes over jagged rocks. It is one of the most powerful natural sights in Cambodia.
- Irrawaddy Dolphin Spotting: While more famous in Kratie, the deep pools near the border in Stung Treng are also home to the rare freshwater dolphins.
- Mekong Blue Silk: Visit this award-winning social enterprise where local women weave some of the finest high-quality silk in the country.
- Kayaking: For the adventurous, kayaking through the gentle rapids and flooded forests offers a quiet, eco-friendly way to see the local birdlife and scenery.
