Located in the serene countryside of Kampong Chhnang, the Farmhouse Resort & Spa (often referred to as Smiling Gecko) is a world-class eco-resort and NGO project. It is more than just a hotel; it is a “Smart Village” designed to provide education, jobs, and sustainable livelihoods to the local community.

🌍 Geography

The Farmhouse is situated in the Sameakki Mean Chey District of Kampong Chhnang Province, about 65km to 80km north of Phnom Penh.

  • Landscape: The resort spans over 150 hectares of lush, tropical gardens, organic farm plots, and fish ponds. It sits between the Aoral Wildlife Sanctuary and the Tonle Sap, surrounded by traditional Khmer stilt houses and endless rice paddies.

🌤️ Climate

The climate follows the central Cambodian tropical cycle:

  • Cool/Dry Season (Nov – Feb): The most comfortable time for farm tours and outdoor activities, with pleasant evening temperatures.
  • Hot Season (Mar – May): The tropical gardens remain lush thanks to the farm’s irrigation, though midday heat can be intense. The “impressive” 4-meter deep swimming pool is a highlight during this time.
  • Rainy Season (Jun – Oct): The farm is at its most productive and green. Rain showers are usually heavy but short, leaving the air fresh and clean.

🗺️ How to Get There

  • From Phnom Penh: The drive takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours via National Highway 5. It is a popular weekend getaway for residents of the capital.
  • Private Taxi: The most common way to reach the resort.
  • Cycling: For the adventurous, the route from Phnom Penh is relatively flat and takes you through scenic red-dirt roads and local villages.

🚲 Getting Around

  • Walking: The resort grounds are expansive but beautifully landscaped for walking between your bungalow, the restaurant, and the spa.
  • Bicycles: Guests can use bicycles to explore the vast farm areas, the carpentry workshop, and the surrounding local villages.
  • On-Site Tours: The resort often provides guided golf cart or walking tours to explain their various agricultural and social projects.

🏛️ What to Do

  • The “Sanctuary Spa”: Indulge in traditional Khmer massages and treatments in a stunning spa garden featuring native Cambodian plants.
  • Farm Tours: Learn about organic pig and chicken farming, aquaculture, and experimental crop cultivation. It’s an educational experience for both adults and children.
  • Gourmet Dining: Eat at the farm-to-table restaurant led by world-class chefs. Most ingredients—from the meat to the vegetables—are harvested directly from the surrounding fields.
  • Swimming: Relax in what is often called one of the most beautiful swimming pools in Cambodia, surrounded by tropical greenery.
  • Carpentry Workshop: Visit the on-site workshop where local artisans create the high-end furniture used throughout the resort.
  • Yoga & Wellness: The resort features dedicated spaces for yoga and meditation, taking advantage of the absolute quiet of the rural surroundings.
