Mondulkiri, Cambodia’s largest and most sparsely populated province, is a world away from the humid plains of the Mekong. Known as the “Switzerland of Cambodia” for its rolling grassy hills and cooler climate, it is the heart of eco-tourism and indigenous Bunong culture.

🌍 Geography

Mondulkiri is located on the eastern plateau, bordering Vietnam to the east and south. Unlike the rest of Cambodia, which is largely flat, Mondulkiri is characterized by:

  • Highland Terrain: Average altitudes range from 200 to 1,000 meters above sea level.
  • Rolling Hills: The iconic “Sea Forest” (Samot Cheur) offers panoramic views of endless green canopy that looks like ocean waves.
  • Waterways: The province is home to several major rivers and is famous for having some of the country’s most powerful waterfalls.

⛅ Climate

Because of its elevation, Mondulkiri is significantly cooler than Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.

  • Cool Season (Nov – Feb): The most popular time to visit. Temperatures can drop to 15°C at night, so bring a jacket!
  • Green/Rainy Season (June – Oct): The landscape is vibrant green, and waterfalls are at their most spectacular, though red-dirt roads can become slippery.

🚐 How to Get There

The provincial capital, Sen Monorom, is approximately 370km (about 5–6 hours) from Phnom Penh.

  • Private Taxi: Expect to pay between $140 and $170 for a private car from Phnom Penh.
  • From Other Cities: Direct vans connect Mondulkiri to Siem Reap (8.5 hours) and Ratanakiri (4 hours).

🛵 Getting Around

  • Motorbike Rental: The best way to see the sights. Rentals cost around $7–$10 per day. The road to Dak Dam is particularly famous for its scenic curves.
  • Tuk-Tuks: Readily available in Sen Monorom for shorter trips or day tours to waterfalls.
  • Tours: Most guesthouses can arrange guided jungle treks or elephant sanctuary visits.

📍 What to Do

Mondulkiri is for nature lovers and those seeking an ethical connection with wildlife.

  1. Ethical Elephant Encounters:
    • Visit the Mondulkiri Project or Elephant Valley Project. These focus on conservation—no riding is allowed. You can watch elephants roam, feed them, and wash them in the river.
  2. Bousra Waterfall:
    • The largest and most iconic waterfall in Cambodia. It has three tiers, with a popular zipline course across the gorge for adrenaline seekers.
  3. Jungle Trekking:
    • Embark on a multi-day trek through Virachey or Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary. You’ll sleep in hammocks and learn about the forest from indigenous Bunong guides.
  4. Phnom Doh Krormom (Sunset Hill):
    • A hilltop pagoda just outside town offering the best sunset views over the “Sea Forest.”
  5. Coffee & Pine Trees:
    • Visit the local coffee plantations or have a picnic in the Pine Tree Forest, where the ground is covered in a soft carpet of needles.
